Since opening in October 2009 from a rural location we have built up great local reputation and are beginning to be known about by a wider audience. We started by providing hot & cold beverages as well as simple sweet treats and sandwiches. This soon developed from lighter bites, into fresh salads and hot meals with a well reputed Sunday Roast trade being the focus of our week. Now The Waymarker is expanding into the field of outside catering and private functions whilest maintaining our homemade and local ingredient ethic as far as possible.
Our team are mostly involved both front and back of house so our customers can enjoy their knowledge of ingredients as well as being introduced to new food combinations and sources. We aim to greet and get to know a little about the customers and ensure a departing comment so complete a wholesome customer experience. If customers wish to be kept informed of our events we allow them to complete a form to receive an e-mail newsletter: sign up here.
Many customers like to hear the story of what our business name means and its historical context to the vicinity.
With all enquiries or bookings we begin by establishing the specific needs and try to be as flexible to requirements as possible. This flexibility with specially designed menus elevates us above others in the functions area as many of our competitors work to the rigidity of set menus. The product quality is ensured by keeping a tight stock control to maintain freshness as well as establishing good links with the local producers and suppliers. This is complemented by our daily menu development as much of our hot offerings are listed on a “specials” board so can also follow the seasonality.
The fruit and vegetables come from Westcountry Fruit Sales, who are very communicative of their Cornish sourced produce. The fishmongers, such as Celtic Fish & Game or Matthew Stevens will also inform on recent catches and their locally sourced options. All our meat comes from R J Trevarthen’s who provide detail on breed and individual farmer are given on request.
There’s also many local beverage producers on our drinks list such as “Origin” coffee; “Tregothnan” Tea; “Cornish Orchards” cider, apple juice & elderflower presse; Frobisher fruit juices; “Keltek” Brewery ales & Lizard ales. Many of these suppliers have a mention on our “Links” section of the website and leaflets in the venue for customers to find out more or order direct.
Our accessibility is friendly to all customers, especially those less-physically able; without it being invasive to the decor or invading space
Our menu caters for or we can purposely cater for special dietary needs on request in both savoury choices and dessert from gluten-free to dairy-free and nut-free. We also stock soya milk for preparing dairy-free coffees. Our sweets also take into consideration vegetarian issues such as use of gelatine in cheesecake or marshmallow in rocky road. For families we provide games and toys or even drawing materials to distract the children while parents enjoy time with a coffee. Our next aim is the installation of baby changing facilities.
Recently we participated in the West Briton’s Buy One Get One Free “Cream Tea” offer which got our name out to many readers from all over the county as well as visitors who were given the voucher to use. The feedback as a result was so positive and our reviews have been substantially added to since this was run. The many review sites we are part of include Trip Advisor, Dine in Cornwall & Facebook. Other internet presence includes twitter and online menus Cornwall, who optimise searches online to cover our multi-faceted avenues of business.
The Waymarker has also held two mid-summer charity events so far. The first was in aid of Truro Cathedral’s Save our Spire with a Poetry, Pavlova & Punch evening, which also resulted in an entry to Cornwall Life. The second was a BBQ and raffle for the K9 Crusaders a dog charity, which saw many new customers finding us and further PR activity in the local media.
